For high school students with foundational STEM knowledge, a hands-on experience like iFLY can solidify an interest in science, technology, engineering, and math that could translate into an exciting STEM career.

What To Expect

During in-person field trips, students will learn how to predict their own terminal velocity using measurements and algebraic reasoning. They’ll have a chance to fly in the wind tunnel and compare their predictions to their actual terminal velocity before brainstorming reasons for any errors. Some of the concepts and STEM activities high school students will discuss include:

How to draw and interpret free-body force diagrams.

Derive equations while using algebraic thinking to understand proportional relationships.

Measure their frontal area to calculate their approximate terminal velocity in the wind tunnel.

Apply engineering principles to think about tunnel design, energy efficiency, and safety factors.

Understand variability, uncertainty, and error in experimental results.

A New Way to Learn About STEM Enriching Virtual Experience

Looking for a digital learning option? Our Virtual STEM program for high school classes is adapted for remote learning with a highly trained STEM Educator to take your students through an interactive presentation and grade-level appropriate STEM project. Either from home or a group classroom, students will create a paper airplane utilizing the five-step engineering design process: ask, imagine, plan, create and improve before testing their airplane and analyzing the results. Virtual STEM program students will also receive a flight voucher that can be redeemed at their local tunnel.
